Frequently Asked Questions

Whats this Unit 424 I hear about?

Unit 424 makes up a part of the Senior Guides qualification. It is about managing a First Aid Scenario. There are opportunities to be assessed for this on the course but it does carry an extra charge. Those wishing to be assessed for this must make it known at the beginning of the course.

Does attending this course make me a qualified River Guide?

No. Parts of the River Guides qualification can be signed off at the River Rescue Workshop. It is difficult to ensure this is done without attending the Course days of the workshop.

What does currency mean in relation to the rescue workshops?

A River Guides qualification does not expire, neither National Raft Guide nor Senior Raft Guide. However Senior Raft Guides cannot use their Senior Qualifcation unless they have attended a recognised rescue coursem refresher or assessment in the last 36 months. The NZRA is one of the ways to maintain currency.

Is rescue technique different in NZ than in other countries?

No, however commonly the way we practise it with a realistic hands on approach is rare. We believe that some of the positions we put ourselves into in training are a part of our workplace and not hazards that we are to avoid. Being under water is not a hazard, being trapped under water is.
